Large Aircraft: Aircraft of more than 12,500 pounds, maximum certificated takeoff weight.

Liability: Any legal responsibility, duty or obligation.

Lifeboat: A specially constructed double ended boat which can withstand heavy, rough seas.

Liquidated Damages: The amount of money specified in a contract to be awarded in the event that the agreement is violated.

Long Boiler Locomotive: A type of locomotive patented by Stephenson in 1842 which was provided with a boiler longer than the usual 9 feet of the day. The objective was to reduce the heat reaching the smoke box in an attempt to reduce the rapid destruction of smoke boxes and chimneys which had occurred up to that time. By increasing the boiler length to 13 feet or more, the temperature was reduced by over 30% and the life of smoke boxes was considerably extended.

Loss Of Consortuium: Damages awarded to a family member (usually a spouse) for loss of companionship.

Lubrication: An essential part of steam locomotive operation, lubrication takes a variety of forms: Worsted pads fed from an oil bath below the bearing, siphoning from trimmings fed from oil baths, mechanical, hydrostatic, oil atomised by steam, and grease.
