It is particularly well-known for its Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, which has been named a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. Its transplant unit is ranked among the best in the mid Atlantic and is one of the few facilities that provides living donor liver transplants. Georgetown University Hospital is also the first East Coast hospital to offer the CyberKnife, the most advanced option in stereotactic radiosurgery, used to treat lesions and tumors of the brain, neck and spine.

When Georgetown University Hospital opened in 1898, it had 33 beds. Now, it boasts 609 beds, more than 1,100 physicians on staff, and employs more than 4,000 personnel. It moved to Reservoir Road in 1930, and remains there to this day. In 2000, it became a MedStar Health Facility. MedStar Health is a not-for-profit network of 9 hospitals and 20 health related businesses located in Maryland and the DC area. It employs more than 5,300 physicians and 23,000 associates. Each year, MedStar facilities serve more than 500,000 patients, including 166,000 inpatient admissions and 1.6 million outpatient visits.
