A private, not-for-profit teaching hospital, Howard University Hospital is one of the most comprehensive hospitals serving the DC area. Founded in 1862 as Freedman’s Hospital, it was originally a refuge for freed slaves who couldn’t receive treatment anywhere else. The hospital began training African American health care professionals in the 1860s, after the Civil War, and became the Howard University Medical School. In 1967, it was transferred to the Howard University campus. Howard University Hospital now occupies a modern facility on Georgia Avenue.

The hospital offers a number of specialized treatment centers including:

  • The Diabetes Treatment Center: a modern facility that works to meet the complex and interrelated needs of diabetes patients through a multi-disciplinary approach to care.
  • Bariatrics/Weight Loss Center: a center for surgical weight loss and follow-up health care. The center includes surgeons with expertise in laparascopic and minimally invasive surgery, as well as bariatricians and plastic surgeons. The center is also experienced in Natural Orifice Revisional Weight Loss Surgery.
  • Cancer Center: The Cancer Center treats a variety of cancers but focuses on cancers that disproportionately affect African Americans. The center includes a 25-bed oncology unit and a Chemotherapy Infusion Center. The Radiology Department has the first stereotactic unit in the DC area, which allows a non-invasive approach to biopsying breast lesions using computer technology.
  • Sickle Cell Disease Center: Founded in 1971, the Sickle Cell Disease Center offers screening in the community, outreach and outpatient clinics.

Additional areas of medical expertise include: Anesthesiology, Cancer, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Community and Family Medicine, Cosmetic/Plastic Surgery, Dentistry, Dermatology, Diabetes, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Endocrinology, Genetics, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Infectious Diseases, Immunization/Tropical Medicine, Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Orthopedic Surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics and Child Health, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Surgery and Transplants.
