Providence Hospital is an acute care, community hospital serving the residents of the District of Columbia. Chartered by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, it’s the city’s oldest hospital in continuous operation. A member facility of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic and nonprofit health care system, Providence Hospital is one of three Catholic hospitals in the nation’s capital.
Providence Hospital has a number of specialized centers of expertise. Seton House offers comprehensive behavioral health services, treating both mental health problems and addiction issues. Carroll Manor is a nursing home and 240 bed rehabilitation center for older Americans, with dedicated associates and a beautiful living environment.
The hospital also has two family medical centers, the Perry Family Health Center and the Fort Lincoln Family Medical Center. Both centers are staffed with family practice physicians and provide services for all age ranges, from infants to senior citizens. Both centers also offer comprehensive care and focus on preventative services. The hospital also partners with the DC Office of Aging to offer free fitness, nutrition and other classes to DC residents age 60 and older.
The Center for Life at Providence Hospital offers gynecological and obstetrical services, focusing on poor and underserved women in the community. Physicians at the Center saw more than 15,000 patients last year, including 1500 new obstetrical patients. The Center also offers some innovative programs: a Centering Pregnancy program that groups 10-12 women with similar due dates, encouraging them to meet once a month during their pregnancy; and a teen parenting program for young mothers.
Providence Hospital offers a Fire and Police Clinic, an occupational health center for police officers, firefighters, uniformed members of the Secret Service and park police.
Other areas of medical expertise at Providence Hospital include a Bariatric Care Center, Cancer – Oncology Services, Cardiovascular Services, Center for Geriatric Medicine, Clinical Research Center, Diabetes, Emergency Services, Gastroenterology – Digestive System, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Intensive Care, Infusion Treatment Center, Medical Imaging – Radiology, Men’s Health Services, Obstetrics – Maternal Health, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Palliative Care, Pulmonary – Respiratory Care, Rehabilitation Services, Sleep Disorder Institute, Surgery Center, Wellness Institute, Surgery Center, and Wellington Pharmacy.
More than 2,550 associates work in the hospital; last year, they handled more than 15,000 admissions and 46,000 visits to the Emergency Room.
In a 2008 interview with Business Journal, Providence Hospital’s CEO, Julius Spears, said that the hospital is expanding in terms of its patient base, and is starting to make increased investment in technology in order to better serve the community.
